The team based in Maranello has been under a great deal of scrutiny at various stages throughout this season for the strategic choices it has made, notably with regard to the races that took place in Monaco and Great Britain.
Charles Leclerc was able to win pole position for the French Grand Prix with the assistance of his teammate Sainz, who gave him a tow during his Q3 hot laps during the qualifying session on Saturday at the Circuit Paul Ricard. Sainz also helped Leclerc set the fastest lap of the session.
Because he upgraded his Power Unit specifically for the competition, Sainz will have to start the race on Sunday from the very back of the grid.
After Saturday’s qualifying, Sainz stated, “I think we’ve received quite a lot of criticism on the strategy front and I think it’s a bit unfair.” Sainz was responding to the criticism that the team had received.
“During the course of this season, each and every team is going to make errors with tyres, both in their selection and their use of tyres. But I believe that throughout this season the squad has been very strong strategically, and I believe that today is evidence of that.
“Also, the relationship with Charles, as well as the way the team works, is another demonstration, I believe, of the fact that it is doing extremely well and that we are functioning very well together.
It’s great to see you again. I believe that you ought to acknowledge to both us and Ferrari that the day went extremely well for all of us.”
After winning his first Formula One race earlier this month at the Silverstone Circuit, Sainz has displayed impressive speed over the entire weekend in France. Sainz won his first F1 race.
The Spaniard claims that the strategy for Ferrari at Le Castellet was always to offer Leclerc a slipstream during the qualifying session; nevertheless, he maintains that he is eyeing a run back to the front of the field during the race.
“The intention was to get to Q3 to give Charles the tow two times as we did,” Sainz said. “We were successful in achieving that goal.” That was the plan for the entirety of the upcoming weekend.
“I know how to offer a good tow because I know what I need in my qualifying lap if I want to gain two or three tenths from a tow,” he said. “I know how to give a good tow because I know what I need in my qualifying lap.” Consequently, I had no trouble figuring out what steps to take, and I believe that we did a good job carrying them out.
“It’s a shame it has to come on a weekend when I’m probably feeling the best with the vehicle and I’ve been very quick through yesterday’s practise,” he said. “It’s a shame it has to come on a weekend when I’m probably feeling the best with the car.”
“I believe my lap in Q2 for today’s qualifying was among the best. But other than that, I’m glad for the team and pleased to see that Charles was able to capitalise on the situation and secure the pole position. Now that the night has passed, it is time for me to return to the front lines tomorrow.”
