Mumbai Indians seek Gujarat’s ‘spark’

July 24, 2022 | Leave a Comment

The Mumbai Indians need to win all five of their remaining games to have any chance of making the playoffs. But Mahela Jayawardene doesn’t. Despite winning the last game with strong batting and bowling, the five-time champions have yet to find a formula or even a template. The in-form Gujarat Titans pose the first threat to their qualification aspirations.

Despite their five-game winning streak coming to an end, the Mumbai Indians head coach admits that the Hardik Pandya-led side has displayed the mentality that his team has lacked this season. Miller, Tewatia, and Rashid have all won games from positions where they’ve been outplayed by individuals. The season demands it. We haven’t had that usual spark.”

Mumbai Indians seek Gujarat's 'spark'

It’s an honest admission from a club that has underperformed and is seeking to regain lost momentum, but there will be no momentum from the win four days ago at DY Patil Stadium. Fortunately, Gujarat’s momentum, if not the spark, has been slightly dampened.

When: May 6, 2022, 7:30 p.m.

Gujarat Titans against Mumbai Indians

What to expect: Despite the hot heat, Mumbai is one of the country’s milder cities, with temperatures predicted to be about 30°C during the match. The humidity will be reduced, but still at a trying 60%.

The two teams have never met.

TEAM MONI

India-Mumbai

Ishan Kishan is one of the few hitters that have opposed Rashid Khan. The leggie hasn’t been able to dismiss him in the IPL in 51 balls. Is it time to demote Kishan to the middle order?

Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Dewald Brevis/Tim David, Kieron Pollard, Hrithik Shokeen, Daniel Sams, Jasprit Bumrah, Kumar Kartikeya, Riley Meredith, Rohit Sharma

Ghatta Titans

If Rohit Sharma survives the middle overs, there might be some exciting clashes. Rashid Khan had the better of the opener against Lockie Ferguson, dismissing him twice in 24 balls.

Sai Sudarshan, Hardik Pandya, David Miller, Rashid Khan, Alzarri Joseph, Pradeep Sangwan/Yash Dayal and Mohammed Shami are among the probable XI.

Did you?

Rashid has claimed 71 wickets in middle overs (7-15) since his IPL debut, but only three this year. Six of his nine IPL 2022 wickets came in the dying overs. As a result, GT has the worst middle over spin numbers this IPL.

Only Sanju Samson has scored more runs than Suryakumar Yadav since 2019.

They said:

This season’s new players putting their hands up and performing have been a highlight for us. Lots to do, but extremely excited. – Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene

“We have chased effectively in this competition, and we knew how to establish targets if needed.” All of this is a part of growing up and learning to step outside of our comfort zones. — Hardik Pandya, Gujarat Titans skipper, following the loss to PBKS.
